SpeedGuide.net

We cover Broadband Internet connections, network security and system performance. A large section of SG focuses on Cable Modems and DSL technology, stressing on improving TCP/IP performance over high speed/latency networks. Some of the more popular SG network tools are listed below:

  • Router Reviews - This is the best list of broadband router reviews i have ever come across. It has decent reviews and default username and password and lots of other related information
  • Ports Database - SG TCP/IP Ports contains a comprehensive, searchable database of official and unofficial tcp/udp port[1] assignments, known vulnerabilities, trojans, applications use and more. The ports, services and protocols database contains combined information derived from IANA, numerous port lists, as well as our own research and user submissions. You can search by application/service name, or simply click on port numbers below for detailed information. Please simply use the "Add comment" buttons on individual port pages to add information about ports not already in the database.
  • Glossary - List of networking, wireless, broadband, satellite, telephony, general computing and other technical terms used throughout the site.
  • SG Broadband Tools
    • SG TCP/IP Analyzer - The SpeedGuide TCP/IP Analyzer is a program designed to display your Internet connection parameters, extracted directly from TCP packets sent by your browser to our server. The Analyzer program then displays recommendations based on the settings extracted from the headers of those packets.
    • SG TCP Optimizer - The TCP Optimizer is a free Windows program designed to help optimize your Internet connection. The program makes it easy to find the best MaxMTU value, test latency and tweak the important Registry Parameters. The Optimizer can be helpful with tuning any Internet connection type, from dialup to Gigabit+ :) If you need help with the program, check the TCP Optimizer Documentation, read our broadband tweaking articles and the related FAQs, and/or visit our Forums.
    • SG Security Scanner - The SpeedGuide.net Security Scanner audits certain ports on your computer detecting potential vulnerabilities. A list of the currently scanned potential exploits can be found - here -.

Note: Some firewalls might log a potential attack from our server if you choose to test the security of your system since we are testing for vulnerabilities.

    • SG Speed Test - A bandwidth speed test, measuring both downstream/upstream line speed at the time. Average speeds per provider are also available.

    • SG IP Address Locator - The SG IP Address locator finds the geographical location of IP address or hostnames, and includes a number of useful network tools, like whois, traceroute, Spam source lookup, latency check, etc.

    • SG Network Tools - The SG Network tools section includes many common network tools such as PING, TRACEROUTE, WHOIS, etc.

    • SG Bits/Bytes Conversion Calculator - The Bits/Bytes calculator is a useful tool for quickly converting bits/bytes, etc. It takes into consideration the different conventons while calculating data communication rates and storage space.

    • SG RWIN/BDP Calculator - The RWIN/BDP calculator can be used to estimate TCP Window values, based on the Bandwidth*Delay Product (BDP for short). It can also calculate maximum bandwidth based on RWIN and latency values, and perform a number of different conversions as well.

    • SG DSL Speed Calculator - The SG DSL Speed Calculator allows for estimating maximum ADSL/ADSL2+/VDSL attainable sync speeds based on downstream attenuation.

    • SG WLAN Key Generator - The WLAN Key generator is a tool for generating random or custom WEP, as well as WPA/PSK keys. The tool helps generate strong keys that are less prone to dictionary attacks, and can be used as a learning tool as well.

    • SG Hash Generator - The Hash generator is a tool that helps convert your sensitive data into hashes, using various popular one-way hasing algorithms, including md4, md5, sha1, sha256, sha512, crc32, ripemd, whirlpool, haval, etc.

  • SG IP Locator - The SG IP locator combines IP/hostname geographic location tracking with useful network tools, such as WHOIS, traceroute, real time spam blacklist check (a.k.a. Multi-RBL, or Multi-DNSBL check), extended client browser details and more. Just choose an IP address or a hostname to retreive detailed network information and access the associated network tools.
  • SG Network Tools
    • Resolve/Reverse Lookup
    • Get DNS Records
    • Reverse DNS (PTR record)
    • Whois (Web)
    • Whois (IP owner)
    • Check port
    • Ping host
    • Traceroute to host
  • SG Security Scan - The SG Security Audit is a comprehensive remote port scanner that audits a number of commonly used ports on your system in order to detect potenital security vulnerabilities. Many of those ports are used by servers, sharing services, trojans/backdoors, worms, as well as crackers trying to break into your system, or obtain information about it. The SG Security Scanner performs real-world attacks and analysis, providing information about the ports it finds open (if any), in order to help secure and better understand the potenital vulnerabilities of your network.
  • SG Speed Test - To test your current line speed, simply choose a server based on your location, and click its link below. The test may take up to two minutes to complete. For more accurate results, you should turn off any applications that are currently using part of your bandwidth, such as internet audio/video streaming, VoIP, P2P, etc. You may also want to temporarily disable firewall software, and any third party security applications that could block large file downloads and/or prevent redirects (such as Norton Internet Security and Zone Alarm). Priority access, more reliable tests, and longer test history is available to registered users.
  • SG TCP/IP Analyzer - The TCP/IP Analyzer results provide packet header information from the TCP 3-way handshake between your computer and our server. The information above can be used to fine-tune TCP/IP settings and optimize your internet connection.
Detailed information on optimizing your network-related settings is available in our Broadband articles and TCP/IP Tweaks Articles.
We have also developed the free TCP Optimizer program to help apply the optimal settings automatically: SG TCP/IP Optimizer
  • SG TCP Optimizer - The TCP Optimizer is a free, easy Windows program that provides an intuitive interface for tuning and optimizing your Internet connection. There is no installation required, just download and run as administrator.
