How to fix MBR and Boot issues in Windows XP

  1. Load the Microsoft Recovery Console from a Windows XP CD
  2. Now at the prompt, type in fixmbr. Your damaged MBR will now be replaced with a new master boot record and your computer should now be able to boot properly. Note that you may also want to run the fixboot command to repair the boot sector with a new one.

A windows XP installation can become unbootable even if the partition is active.

This is usually caused by the boot loader files being located on another partiton and have not been moved when the windows install was imaged to another drive or that the partition arrangement has changed.

copy the following files to the windows XP system drive. The following files make up the windows XP bootloader. Make sure this new windows system partition is set active.

  1. ntldr
  2. NTDETECT.COM
  3. boot.ini - properly configured

Start, Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.

Give these fixes a try after the reset.

Changes that may help to increase the compatibility of Vista with older networking devices:

Disable the IP Helper service:

1. Hold the Windows key and type R, enter "services.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter
2. Scroll down to the IP Helper service, right click on it and select Properties
3. In the dropdown box that says "Automatic" or "Manual", set it to Disabled and then click on "Apply"
4. Then click on "Stop" to stop the service from running in the current session
5. Click OK to exit the dialog

Disable IPv6:

1. Hold the Windows key and type R, enter "ncpa.cpl" (without the quotes) and press Enter
2. Right click on each network connection and select "Properties"
3. Remove the checkmark from the box next to "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)
4. Click OK to exit the dialog

NOTE: You should do this for each network connection.

Disable the DHCP Broadcast Flag:

Link: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/928233
  1. Hold the Windows key and type R, enter regedit and press Enter.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
  3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Inter faces\{GUID}
  4. In this registry path, click the (GUID) subkey to be updated.
  5. If the key DhcpConnForceBroadcastFlag does not exist, use the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD (32-bit) Value. In the New Value #1 box, type DhcpConnForceBroadcastFlag, and then press ENTER. If the key exists, skip this step.
  6. Right-click DhcpConnForceBroadcastFlag, and then click Modify.
  7. In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.
  8. Close Registry Editor.
NOTE: You should do this for each and every GUID subkey.
NOTE2: (GUID) is a mnemonic for the individual subkeys, the actual text "GUID" does not appaer.

The only program I'm aware of that currently relies on IPv6 is the new Windows Meeting Space. The first 2 changes will cause that program not to work - but will leave all of your normal (IPv4) connections unaffected. If it causes problems that you can't overcome, simply revert back to the original settings.

I tried to run scannow to repair Windows Vista.  I did that, but the scan only ran until 76%, then I received the message:  Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation."  How can I complete the scan and repair my Windows Vista.

Are you performing the steps from the administrator account?

To determine which files could not be repaired by the System File Checker tool, follow these steps:

Step 1:

NOTE: When SFC runs, it logs it's actions to the C:\WINDOWS\LOGS\CBS\CBS.LOG. You can find the specific SFC entries by searching for the [SR] tags in the log.

For how,to see only the SFC scan details in the CBS.LOG:

        * Open a elevated command prompt.

        * In the elevated command prompt, type findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt and press Enter.

        * Close the elevated command prompt.

        * Click on the sfcdetails.txt file that was just placed on your desktop to see the SFC scan details (ones with the [SR] tags) in the CBS.LOG.

        * You can safely delete the sfcdetails.txt file afterwards if you like.

Reply back with the details in the log file.

If that does not help to complete the scan, you could perform the below steps and check.

Are you able to boot into safe mode ?

Step 2:

Refer the following Microsoft article for more information on how to log in to safe mode:

If you're able to boot into safe mode, you may perform a System File Checker (SFC) scan.

Refer:

How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833

Step 3:

Additionally, you may log in to command prompt and check drive for errors and check if that makes things any simpler.

In the command prompt, type the following command and hit Enter:

chkdsk /r

Note: If any bad sectors are found while running the check disk utility and if attempt recovery of bad sectors is checked while checking the drive for errors, the data in the bad sector may be lost while attempting to recover bad sectors.

This article might apply to none acer computers.

When you turn the computer on it locks or stops loading at the splash screen or at various parts of the BIOS load procedure and windows is not loaded. If the full screen logo is not turned on this error might be presented at a slightly different point.

Unable to upgrade Windows Vista / Windows 7

If you are having major issues trying to repair a windows vista / windows 7 installation, the best way to fix it is to repair upgrade it, however you might get the following errors, they need to be worked through to be able to perform an upgrade as you cannot do repair installs anymore.

II found that if windows will not boot using any of the options in the boot menu you can then set the client PC into bootdebug mode by pressing F10 and the correct entry, then start  debugging on the Server machine, connect the client PC physically with a firewire cable. This allows the client PC to boot using i assume an alternative kernel.

NB: you can put the Client PC in to bootdebug mode and connected by firewire cable by pressing F10

after you login "an unauthorized change was made to windows" message appears with the 2 options:

  1. "learn more online"
  2. "close"
  • if you click close you logout
  • if you click learn more online it takes you to the windows online genuine advantage validation page. in this case it had failed and would not revalidate

try one or more of the following:

  • uninstall the validation update
  • change the key
  • rearm
  • sfc /scannow

NB: to access the explorer, type c:\windows\explorer.exe in to the addressbar

didnt work, so addition

go to c:\windows\system32 and set the read only bit for that folder and all sub folders

wga diag does not run in safe mode

the tokens removal instruction might or might not have an effect on the "not enough quota is available to process this command" error.

If windows loads in restricted mode the following should allow upgrading

  • boot in to normal mode or debug mode
  • click learn more online (internet connection not required)
  • run c:\windows\explorer.exe from address bar, you might be able to run d:\setup.exe from the address bar
  • run upgrade from vista setup disk, same service pack version might be required.
  • complete the upgrade

NB: If you get "not enough quota is available to process this command" this might be overcome by trying different methods of accessing the setup.exe on the vista setup disk. ie

  • start/run
  • my computer / setup.exe
  • address bar in internet explorer
  • running as an admiinistrator might be required

How to Reset the HP Laserjet P2015 Printer

How to Reset/ NVRAM initialization / Super NVRAM initialization / Network reset / Cold reset the HP Laserjet P2015 Printer.

NVRAM initialization the HP Laserjet P2015 Printer

CAUTION Only perform the following procedure if absolutely necessary. Performing an NVRAM initialization resets some parameters that cannot be restored later.

NVRAM initialization sets all default variables stored in NVRAM back to factory default values or to a default ROM value, depending on the variable. It also performs a system reset.

NVRAM initialization resets the following:

  • All menu settings to factory default values
  • Factory settings such as formatter number, page counts, and factory paper settings

Use the following procedure to perform an NVRAM initialization.

  1. Turn the printer off.
  2. Press and hold down the Go button.
  3. Turn the printer on, and continue to hold the Go button for at least 20 seconds. During this process, the Go button, Attention, and Ready LEDs each turn on.
  4. Release the Go button.

The printer lights begin cycling. After the NVRAM initialization is complete, the printer returns to the ready state.

Super NVRAM initialization the HP Laserjet P2015 Printer
This feature is similar to NVRAM initialization, except all of NVRAM is re-initialized (including the
configuration parameters not reset by an NVRAM initialization).

Use the following procedure to perform an NVRAM initialization.

  1. Turn off the HP Laserjet P2015 Printer.
  2. Press and hold the Go button.
  3. Turn on the printer and continue to hold the Go button for at least 50 seconds. During this process, the Attention, Ready, Go lights turn on. Then the Attention and Ready lights turn off, leaving only the Go light illuminated.
  4. Release the Go button. The Go, Ready and Attention lights turn on.
  5. Press and hold the Go button. All lights turn off. During the next three seconds, the Go, Ready and Attention lights turn on in that order, one per second.
  6. Release the Go button to perform the initialization. The control panel lights begin cycling from front to back. After the Super NVRAM initialization process is complete, the printer returns to the ready state.

Network reset the HP Laserjet P2015 Printer
A network reset changes all network system parameters in NVRAM to the factory defaults. During the network-reset process, all button presses are ignored.
Use the following procedure to perform a network reset.

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Press and hold the Job Cancel button.
  3. Turn on the printer and continue to hold the Job Cancel button for approximately 10 seconds, but no longer than 20 seconds. During this process, the Attention light turns on.
  4. Release the Job Cancel button. The Attention, Ready, and Go lights begin cycling from front to back. After the network-reset process is complete, the device returns to the ready state.

NOTE If the Attention and Ready lights illuminate before you release the Job Cancel
button, start again at step 1.

Cold reset the HP Laserjet P2015 Printer

A cold reset changes most system parameters in NVRAM to the factory defaults. However, unlike NVRAM initialization, a cold reset does not reset the page count, the paper tray sizes, language, or formatter number.

NOTE A cold reset also resets all the HP Jetdirect settings as well as the printer settings.

Use the following procedure to perform a cold reset.

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Press and hold the Go button.
  3. Turn the printer on, and continue to hold the Go button for at least 5 seconds, but not longer than 15 seconds. During this process, the Attention LED turns on.
  4. Release the Go button.

NOTE If both the Attention and the Ready LEDs turn on before you release the Go button, you must start the procedure again with step 1.

The printer’s LEDs begin cycling. The cold-reset process runs until completion, and the printer returns to the ready state.

My experience in installing Microsoft Security Essentials.

I tried to install MSE on my XP laptop and I got an installation error - 0x8004FF01.

After looking through a couple of posts I tried the following:

  1. Download and install the latest Windows Installer 4.5 from here:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942288
  2. Ensure the Windows Installer service is set to automatic and started.

After doing these 2 things, the install worked fine.
